WILLIAMSPORT PA – The State College Spikes made history Wednesday night at Journey Bank Ballpark, walking their way to a dominant 11-2 victory over the Williamsport Crosscutters. Fueled by a franchise-record 17 walks and complemented by 11 hits, the Spikes’ offense overwhelmed the Crosscutters from the third inning onward.
After two scoreless frames, the Spikes exploded in the third. Javon Hernandez led off with a double, followed by a triple from Carmelo Musacchia that brought Hernandez home. A wild pitch then scored Musacchia, and the floodgates opened. Landen Johnson and Hugh Pinkney walked with Caden Shapiro singling bringing in Johnson for a score putting State College up 3-0. After a pitching change the damage wasnt done as Camden Ross walked, Bentley hit a single leading to Rivera scoring, and Hernandez reached on a fielding error to get Shapiro in for a score. The inning ended with the Spikes up 5-0
They weren’t done. In the fourth, Musacchia walked and was driven in by a Johnson double. Later, Camden Ross was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, pushing another run across. giving the Spikes a 7-0 lead.
Even when Williamsport got on the board with a run in the fourth and a solo homer from Boston Smith in the fifth, the Spikes kept their foot on the gas. Javon Hernandez scored on a sac fly in the seventh, Ryan Rivera drove in another in the eighth, and Hugh Pinkney scored on a passed ball to round out the barrage.
Pitching was just as strong. Treyson Peters earned the win with Bobby Olsen pitching for 4 innings and recording 6 strikeouts. The Spikes staff scattered 10 hits but allowed just two runs while striking out 11 total all night.
With the win, State College improves to 6-8, while Williamsport falls to 10-6. The two teams will meet again tonight for their final game of the 3 game series.
