Baseball: Millersville Offense Overpowers Kutztown in 14-2 Victory

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Millersville University’s baseball team showcased relentless offense and dominant pitching to defeat Kutztown University 14-2 in an eight-inning contest at North Campus Field on Saturday, May 8, 2021. The Marauders (25-11, 22-8 PSACE) scored in six of eight innings, capitalizing on 15 hits and seven walks, while starter Cole Cook silenced Kutztown’s bats with a complete-game gem.

Early Lead and Offensive Surge
Millersville struck first in the opening inning when Ben Taylor tripled and later scored on a wild pitch. Kutztown (17-20, 11-20 PSACE) responded in the bottom half with a two-run homer by Mike Peers, but it proved to be their only highlight. The Marauders erupted for three runs in the third, sparked by Luke Trainer’s two-RBI double and Cole Friese’s RBI single. They added two more in the fourth on Taylor’s RBI double and a wild pitch, then blew the game open with a five-run fifth inning. Friese launched a two-run homer, and pinch-hitter Chase Simmons later delivered a three-run blast in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Standout Performances
Ben Taylor led Millersville’s lineup, going 4-for-5 with a triple, a double, and three runs scored. Trainer drove in four runs, while Friese and Simmons combined for five RBIs. Starter Cole Cook (7 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 12 BB, 0 K) earned his fourth win, relying on defense to strand 12 Kutztown baserunners.

Kutztown’s Zach Male (6-2) struggled, surrendering nine runs (eight earned) over 4.1 innings. Reliever Kyle Cracknell allowed five runs in 2.2 innings. Peers’ first-inning homer accounted for both Golden Bears runs.

Defensive Woes
Kutztown committed three errors, including two by third baseman Zack Moretski, which led to two unearned runs. Millersville’s defense, aside from a lone error by shortstop Eric Callahan, remained steady.

The game concluded after eight innings with Millersville comfortably ahead. The Marauders’ victory reinforced their position atop the PSAC East, while Kutztown’s struggles continued amid a challenging season.
